Gold karats and purity hallmarks

A hallmark shows the fineness; when in doubt, test.

On jewellery, fineness is usually stamped in parts per thousand: 585 (14K), 750 (18K), 916 (22K), 999 (24K). The stamp says how many parts out of a thousand are pure gold. Pieces with no stamp, a worn stamp or doubtful origin should be tested.

Hallmarking rules differ by country. Confirm the current rules in Romania with the competent authority.

  • Touchstone and acid test. Quick, approximate result.

  • XRF analyser. Measures fineness without damaging the surface, but plating can mislead it.

  • Fire assay (cupellation). The most accurate method; it uses up the sample.
