What to check when selling scrap gold

Choosing the right buyer, comparing prices and getting a receipt protect your money.

Selling scrap gold can feel quick, but a few checks make a real difference.

  • Ask about the buyer's authorisation. Buying scrap gold requires legal authorisation. You are entitled to see the company name, address and licence.

  • Weighing and testing happen in front of you. It is normal to see the scale display and ask how the karat is measured.

  • Ask for the price per gram, in writing. Which karat, how many grams, which price per gram, and how far below spot. The calculator in the app gives you a reference.

  • Stones and solder. For pieces with stones the stone weight is deducted. Ask how it is done.

  • Get more than one offer and compare on the same day; prices move during the day.

  • Paperwork and payment. Take a receipt or sales document. You may be asked for ID, which is a legal requirement. Cash payment limits may apply.
