Gold karats and fineness

How 14K, 18K and 585 or 750 marks relate to each other.

Karat (K) shows how many of 24 parts are pure gold. 24K is pure gold. 18K means 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, which is a fineness of 750 per thousand.

Hallmarks are usually stamped in thousandths, for example 585 or 750. Knowing the fineness is the first step to valuing any lot.
